"Devastating Floods in Derna, Libya: A Human-Caused Catastrophe"

The death toll from the flooding in the Libyan coastal city of Derna has risen to 11,300, with another 10,100 reported missing. The flooding was caused by the breaching of two dams during heavy rains, exacerbated by the neglect of infrastructure in the conflict-ridden country. The storm also killed around 170 people in other parts of eastern Libya. Rescue efforts are ongoing, but access to affected areas has been hampered by damaged roads. International aid has started to arrive, with countries including Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, and Italy providing assistance.
