Iceland's State of Emergency: Earthquakes and Volcano Eruption Fears

Iceland has declared a state of emergency after a series of earthquakes hit the Reykjanes peninsula, raising concerns of a volcanic eruption. The town of Grindavik is being evacuated, and the Icelandic Meteorological Office warns that an eruption could occur within days. Thousands of tremors have been recorded since October, with an accumulation of magma at a depth of five kilometers. Iceland has the highest number of active volcanic systems in Europe, and the last eruption in 2010 caused widespread flight cancellations.
