Louisiana Wildfires: Urgent Evacuations and Growing Fire Risk

A massive and uncontrollable wildfire in Louisiana has prompted the evacuation of nearly 1,000 residents in the town of Merryville. The Tiger Island fire, which started in Pitkin, has spread rapidly due to shifting wind conditions and dry vegetation. Efforts to extinguish the flames have been hindered by dangerous conditions, and at least one house has been destroyed. The fire is the largest seen in the state in recent years and is believed to be a consequence of the record-breaking US heatwave fueled by the global climate crisis. Louisiana has experienced over 357 wildfires, destroying thousands of acres of land and property. In addition, residents near an oil refinery in St John the Baptist parish were also evacuated after a fire broke out in a storage tank.
