Multiple Brush Fires Spark Evacuations in West Maui; Power Restored

A brush fire burned 7 acres in Lahaina, Maui, prompting the brief evacuation of a neighborhood before firefighters brought it under control. The fire was 85% contained and evacuation orders were lifted. Over 100 people on the list of 388 individuals unaccounted for since previous wildfires came forward to say they are safe, but their status still needs to be confirmed. The Lahaina fire has burned 3.39 acres and is 90% contained, with the cause still under investigation. The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency has a new interim chief after its previous administrator resigned amid criticism for the agency's response to the Lahaina blaze. Maui County has also sued Hawaiian Electric Company over the fires, alleging negligence in failing to shut off power during high winds and dry conditions.
