Despite polls showing a majority of Americans supporting some form of gun control, gun sales have skyrocketed in recent years, with 29% of Americans purchasing a gun for self-defense and 40% taking a gun safety course or practicing shooting. The NRA's lobbying efforts have made it easier to carry guns in public, but the sheer number of guns owned by Americans is leading to more violence and death. While mass shootings account for a small fraction of gun violence, far more people die from handguns, and victims are usually Black and brown. The author argues that Americans need to break their addiction to guns and focus on protecting themselves and being aware of their surroundings.
