Australia Rejects Indigenous Panel and Historic Referendum for Indigenous Rights

Australia's referendum to create an Indigenous advocacy committee to advise Parliament on policies affecting Indigenous people has been defeated, with 57% of voters opposing the proposal. The referendum required majorities in at least four of the six states and a national majority to pass. Advocates for the Indigenous Voice expressed devastation and blamed unfair attacks on the plan. Indigenous Australians, who make up 3.8% of the population, face significant disparities in health and well-being compared to the wider population. This would have been the first referendum passed since 1977 and the first without bipartisan support.
