Australians voted against a referendum that would have enshrined in the nation's constitution a mechanism for Indigenous people to advise Parliament on policies affecting their lives. Proponents argued that it would recognize the special place of Indigenous people in Australian history and provide them with input in government policies. However, opponents believed it would divide Australians along racial lines without reducing Indigenous disadvantages. The proposal, known as the Voice, was recommended by Indigenous leaders in 2017 but faced opposition from the conservative government. This marks the 37th failed referendum in Australia's history.
