Brandon Johnson, a union organizer and Cook County Commissioner, has been elected as the next mayor of Chicago, defeating moderate Democrat Paul Vallas. Johnson, who was backed by the Chicago Teachers Union and a coalition of progressive activists, promised to invest in community programs and mental health resources to address the city's crises, including crime, lack of affordable housing, and budget shortfall. He also vowed to hold police accountable and evaluate the goals and performance of the Chicago Police Department.
