"House GOP Leaders Reject Senate's Spending Bill, Increasing Shutdown Odds"

The likelihood of a federal government shutdown has increased as House Republicans rejected a bipartisan Senate plan to fund the government beyond the weekend deadline. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy stated that he would not put the Senate bill on the floor in its current form and instead proposed stripping it of provisions the House GOP opposes and adding a House-passed border security bill. The different tactics being pursued make a government shutdown almost certain unless a long-shot solution is found. The current funding laws expire at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, and without a stopgap spending bill, certain federal agencies will close, military service members and government employees will go without paychecks, and antipoverty programs and assistance to natural disaster victims will be delayed.
