House Overcomes GOP Infighting, Advances Key Spending Bills

House Republicans passed a procedural hurdle on government funding, advancing four appropriations bills for debate and final vote this week. The only Republican to vote against was Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who protested funds going toward Ukraine. Speaker Kevin McCarthy celebrated the bill's passage and indicated that a short-term funding bill, known as a continuing resolution (CR), would likely be voted on Friday. The House and Senate still need to reach an agreement on funding the government past September 30 to avoid a partial shutdown. The House GOP's proposed CR, which includes cuts to government spending and measures from Republicans' border security bill, is unlikely to gain traction in the Democratic-held Senate. The two chambers are also far apart on their individual appropriations bills for the next fiscal year.
