Massive Protests in Spain Against Proposed Amnesty for Catalan Separatists

Thousands of people gathered in Madrid to protest against a possible amnesty for those involved in the failed push for Catalan independence in 2017. The issue of amnesty has emerged as a divisive topic following the inconclusive general election in July. The conservative People's Party (PP) organized the rally, accusing the acting Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez of lacking integrity and being beholden to Catalan separatists. Sánchez, who pardoned nine Catalan independence leaders two years ago, has not ruled out the possibility of amnesty. The PP aims to rally its supporters and portray Sánchez as weak and dependent on separatists.
