Donald Trump's attorney, John Lauro, has suggested that former Vice President Mike Pence would be the "best witness" for the defense in Trump's criminal conspiracy charges related to the 2020 election. Lauro downplayed differences between Trump and Pence's accounts of events leading up to the January 6th Capitol attack and argued that constitutional disagreements have never been prosecuted criminally in US history. Pence, who is running against Trump for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, stated that he has "no plans" to testify for the prosecution. Trump has pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiring to overturn the election results and obstructing the certification. Lauro criticized the indictment as politically motivated and plans to file a motion to dismiss the charges. Trump also claimed on social media that he would not receive a fair trial in Washington DC.
