Temporary Loss and Disruption: Michigan Democrats' Hold on State Government Shaken by Mayoral Wins

Two state House Democrats in Michigan, Rep. Kevin Coleman and Rep. Lori Stone, won mayoral elections, which will result in a temporary loss of control for the Democratic Party in the state House until a special election is held in 2024. The House will be split 54-54 once Coleman and Stone resign from the legislature to take up their new roles. However, Democrats will still remain in control until the seats are filled, as rules were changed earlier this year.
