Massive Protests in Italy Demand an End to Violence Against Women

Tens of thousands of people participated in protests across Italy, demanding an end to violence against women following the recent murder of a university student. Giulia Cecchettin was allegedly killed by her ex-boyfriend just days before her graduation. Italy's president condemned the violence, stating that it cannot be tolerated. The protests come amidst public anger over the murder and a growing reckoning over femicide in the country. Data shows that 106 women have been killed in Italy this year, with 55 allegedly by a partner or ex-partner. Various events were organized to raise awareness of gender-based violence, including marches, flash mobs, and free gynaecological examinations.
