Churchill Downs Investigates String of Horse Deaths Ahead of Kentucky Derby

Four horses have died at Churchill Downs over the past five days, including Derby entrant Wild On Ice. Two horses trained by Saffie Joseph Jr. also collapsed and died on the track. Churchill Downs Racetrack expressed concern over the deaths and said officials would press for answers. The deaths happening in different manners points to factors beyond the racing surface. Lisa Lazarus, CEO of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority, said the organization is in contact with the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission and Churchill Downs.
