EU Official Warns Elon Musk's X: Biggest Purveyor of Disinformation

European Commission Vice President Vera Jourova has criticized X (formerly Twitter), owned by Elon Musk, as the biggest source of fake news and disinformation. Jourova urged X and other major platforms like Google, TikTok, Microsoft, and Meta to do more to combat disinformation, particularly from Russia, which is using social media to undermine democracy. With upcoming elections in Slovakia, Poland, and the EU, Jourova emphasized the need for online platforms to address the risk of online meddling. Twitter dropped out of the EU's voluntary Code of Practice on Disinformation after Musk's acquisition, but Jourova warned that the company is still obligated to comply with new mandatory regulations. A study by the European Commission found that Twitter had the highest prevalence of disinformation.
