Google Urges EU to Regulate Apple's iMessage for Better Compatibility

Google and several cell carriers are urging the EU to designate Apple's iMessage as a "core" service under the Digital Markets Act, which would require it to be interoperable. While iMessage was initially left off the list of services targeted by the Act, it is currently under investigation to determine if it should qualify. Google argues that iMessage should be regulated due to its limited interoperability, while Apple contends that it is too small for regulation and primarily designed for personal consumer communications. If iMessage is designated as a gatekeeper service, Apple would need to open up the platform in the EU by August.
