James Cameron, director of the movie Titanic, compared the tragic loss of the submersible Titan to the sinking of the Titanic, citing overconfidence that led to disaster. Cameron, who is a submersible designer himself, called the carbon fiber construction of the Titan as "fundamentally flawed." The Titan, operated by OceanGate Expeditions to explore the wreckage of the sunken SS Titanic off the coast of Newfoundland, sank with five passengers on board. Members of the deep-diving community had been ringing alarm bells about the safety measures for the Titan for some time.
