Schools in New Delhi have closed and residents have been advised to stay indoors as the city grapples with a thick haze of pollution that descends annually during winter. Despite measures to mitigate the effects, such as ordering diesel-burning vehicles off the roads and halting construction, there has been little relief for the city's residents. Breathing the polluted air, which contains fine particles linked to serious health conditions, has been compared to smoking 20 to 25 cigarettes a day. The average concentration of pollution in Delhi on Friday was around 500 micrograms per cubic meter, reaching 643 in some areas.
