Officer shot outside Belleville synagogue; SIU investigating

A police officer was shot outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, during Yom Kippur. Both the officer and a suspect were injured and transported to hospital; the incident is under investigation by Ontario's Special Investigations Unit. Premier Doug Ford condemned the shooting and urged that those responsible be arrested and prosecuted. Toronto police said they would increase patrols at synagogues and Jewish communities as a precaution while the investigation continues.
