Indonesian Police Bust Kidney Trafficking Ring, Rescuing 122 Victims

Indonesian police are investigating a case of illegal human organ trade involving police and immigration officers who allegedly helped traffickers send 122 Indonesians to Cambodia to sell their kidneys. Twelve people, including a police officer and an immigration officer, have been arrested. The victims, who were factory workers, teachers, and executives, have returned to Indonesia. The suspects face charges of violating Indonesia's human trafficking law, with penalties of up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to 600 million rupiah ($39,000). The illegal trade in human organs is estimated to have generated about 24.4 billion rupiah ($1.6 million) since 2019.
