Canada's New Regulations Impact International Students and Postsecondary Institutions

British Columbia will halt approvals for new colleges enrolling international students until February 2026, implementing minimum language requirements and higher standards for labor market needs and degree quality. This decision aligns with the Canadian government's efforts to address the surge in immigration of international students, which has contributed to rental unit shortages and a 7.7% nationwide rent increase. The federal government has also announced a two-year cap on new international student permits and will stop giving work permits to some students after graduation, in response to the significant increase in international study permit holders in Canada over the past decade.
