The JN.1 variant of COVID-19, which is closely related to the Pirola variant, is now the fastest-growing strain in the United States, accounting for 29% of all cases. While it does not cause more severe illnesses, it is responsible for the recent increase in cases. Symptoms of JN.1 are similar to other COVID strains and include sore throat, congestion, runny nose, cough, fatigue, headache, muscle aches, fever or chills, and loss of sense of taste or smell. Current vaccines are effective in preventing serious illness from the infection.
