Israeli Researcher Elizabeth Tsurkov's Abduction in Iraq Raises Concerns over Safety Precautions

Elizabeth Tsurkov, an Israeli-Russian researcher and doctoral student at Princeton University, was kidnapped by the Kataib Hezbollah militia in Iraq in March. Her sister, Emma Tsurkov, revealed that Elizabeth was already taking precautions due to the risks involved for an Israeli national visiting Iraq. The family initially kept the kidnapping private, hoping for a quick resolution, but the news broke on July 5. Israeli authorities have been in contact with the family and are holding Iraqi authorities responsible for Elizabeth's well-being. The Russian government is also involved in the negotiations. Elizabeth's research focused on the Sadrist movement, and she understood the dangers of her fieldwork but took precautions. The Iraqi government is conducting an investigation into the kidnapping.
