Iceland on High Alert as Volcanic Threat Looms
Icelandic authorities are preparing for a volcanic eruption in the southwest of the island in the coming days after a series of earthquakes and evidence of rapidly spreading magma underground. The Icelandic Meteorological Office has stated that there is a "considerable" risk of an eruption on or just off the Reykjanes peninsula. The Civil Protection Agency has ordered a complete evacuation of Grindavik, a fishing town of around 3,000 residents. The region has experienced several eruptions in unpopulated areas in recent years, and the latest eruption is expected to begin on the seabed just southwest of Grindavik. Increased seismic activity has already prompted the closure of the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa.
