Iceland Volcano Erupts Repeatedly, Causing Infrastructure Damage

A volcano on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula has erupted again, causing damage to water and electric infrastructure in the region just south of the nation’s capital. The eruption, which began with seismic activity followed by lava bursting from the earth, created a 1.8-mile-long fissure and spewed lava up to 230 feet into the sky. A state of emergency was declared in several municipalities as the lava flow damaged a hot water pipeline and a power line, potentially cutting off electricity for residents of Grindavik. This comes after months of seismic activity in the area, with the most recent eruption occurring in January.
