Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula Volcano Eruption Sparks Evacuation and Travel Concerns

After a month of anticipation, a volcano erupted on Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula, leading to the evacuation of thousands of residents from the nearby fishing town of Grindavik. The eruption, which occurred on Monday night, has created a 2.5-mile-long ground fissure and is accompanied by decreasing intensity. The Blue Lagoon Spa, a popular attraction, has temporarily closed, while Keflavik Airport is still functioning normally despite some flight cancellations. This is the fourth eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula in the past three years, with volcanic activity in Iceland increasing to approximately once every 12 months since 2021.
