Congo Election Commission Appeals for Assistance in Distributing Voting Materials

The Democratic Republic of Congo's electoral commission (CENI) has requested urgent assistance from the presidency to distribute voting materials for the upcoming national elections on December 20. The request for four Antonov planes and ten helicopters highlights the logistical challenges faced by the country, including poor road networks and insecurity in rebel-plagued eastern provinces. The CENI cited the lack of air services, fuel shortages, and the ongoing electoral campaign as factors hindering their mobility and intervention capacity. Some analysts and civil society leaders have expressed concerns about potential delays, but President Felix Tshisekedi's spokesperson assured that the government would support the logistical deployment, security, and financing of the elections, emphasizing that they would take place within the deadline.
