Italy declares state of emergency for migrant crisis.

Italy's cabinet has declared a state of emergency on immigration due to a "sharp rise" in flows across the Mediterranean, with initial funding of €5m ($5.45m) and lasting for six months. The move aims to better manage migrant arrivals and repatriation facilities, allowing the government to more quickly repatriate those not allowed to stay in Italy. The government has pledged to curb mass immigration, but over 31,300 migrants have arrived in Italy so far in 2021, up from around 7,900 in the same period last year. The state of emergency will boost identification and expulsion orders, but the solution can only depend on responsible intervention by the European Union, said the civil protection minister.
