Paraguay Election Results: Protests and Concerns Over Taiwan Ties

Supporters of Paraguayan presidential candidate Paraguayo Cubas clashed with police outside the electoral court and blocked roads with burning tires, demanding a recount of votes and alleging fraud in the election won by the ruling Colorado Party's candidate Santiago Pena. Cubas, who came third with nearly 23% of the vote, called for a recount and asked his supporters to protest. Runner-up Efrain Alegre also called for a recount and an international audit of the computer programs used in electronic ballot boxes. Interior Minister Federico Gonzalez called for "sanity" and respect for the electoral court's procedures.
