Italy has seized a rescue ship funded by the artist Banksy, which was attempting to rescue migrants crossing the Mediterranean. The seizure comes as the number of migrants attempting to cross the sea from North Africa to Europe has surged. The ship, named the Louise Michel, had been carrying 219 migrants and was in distress when it was rescued by the Italian coastguard.
