The FDA has authorized Abbott Diabetes Care’s Libre Duo 10 Day Continuous Dual Glucose Ketone Monitoring System for people aged 2 and older with diabetes, making it the first US wearable to continuously monitor ketones and the first system globally to track glucose and ketones together. The device measures both analytes under the skin every minute, streams readings to a smartphone, and can send alerts for rising ketone levels. Supported by six studies with over 600 participants, it identified elevated ketones before the onset of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), potentially enabling earlier intervention and sick-day management. Ketone readings should be interpreted with glucose data and symptoms. This breakthrough device is particularly relevant as roughly 40 million Americans have diabetes, and clinicians will need guidance on sick-day protocols and insulin adjustments. Reference data from the FDA and CDC are cited in the release.
