Population shifts: Manhattan rebounds while Los Angeles declines.
Manhattan added over 17,000 residents in the year ending July 2022, after losing almost 111,000 people in the previous 12-month period due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The growth was propelled by international migration and to a lesser extent by domestic migration and births outpacing deaths. The reversal in population losses was also seen in other large urban counties such as King County, Washington, and two South Florida counties, Miami-Dade and Broward. However, the three counties encompassing the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens recorded among the biggest population declines in the US.
