The AI Hype: Pausing Development Too Late?

Computational linguist Emily Bender warns of the dangers of large language models like ChatGPT, which can produce noninformation that gets interpreted and becomes misinformation, including repeating racist remarks. She argues that the hype around AI is a distraction from the real harms that are happening now, such as the pollution of our information ecosystem. Bender also suggests that the term "artificial intelligence" is misleading and proposes a better term, "systematic approaches to learning algorithms and machine inferences" or SALAMI.
