A gas station owner in Oregon bought a decommissioned B-17 bomber in 1947 to use as a canopy for his gas station. After years of being a popular roadside attraction, the aircraft fell into disrepair. Now, a nonprofit organization called the B-17 Alliance is working to restore the aircraft, known as the "Lacey Lady," to its former glory. The restoration project is estimated to cost over $6 million and aims to make the B-17 airworthy again by 2037.
