Amazon pivots to frontier AI, winding down its flagship Nova lineup

Amazon is overhauling its AI strategy, winding down most in-house Nova flagship models and shuttering the AGI Lab, while consolidating engineering and computing resources behind a new Frontier Model Research effort led by Pieter Abbeel. The plan aims to develop a next-generation foundation model that is expected to debut at this year’s re:Invent, with senior leadership under Peter DeSantis focusing on a smaller set of frontier models rather than a broad portfolio. Some Nova assets may continue as KTLO offerings, but the emphasis is squarely on advancing frontier AI.
