Illinois Invests Millions in EV Charging Infrastructure Expansion

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has awarded $12.6 million to 10 companies to build 87 new public plug-in stations that will have 387 fast-charging ports. The initial wave of chargers is being paid for by part of the state’s share of a nationwide settlement with Volkswagen for violating emissions standards. The state has another $70 million from the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act passed in 2021 along with a $148 million federally-funded buildout of EV chargers. The federal government is providing $5 billion in grants to fund chargers along interstates nationwide.
