Texas Power Grid Struggles to Meet Record Demand Amid Heatwave

Texas' power grid operator, ERCOT, has asked residents to voluntarily reduce their electricity consumption due to anticipated record demand on the system as a heatwave scorches the southern US. Many residents in Mississippi have been without power and air conditioning for almost 100 hours, longer than the outages caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The request by ERCOT was its first of the year to cut energy consumption, and it noted that the state set an unofficial June record on Monday for energy demand.
