The daily contraceptive pill, known as Opill and sold by Perrigo, was first approved for prescription use in 1973. This approval aims to address barriers to obtaining contraceptives such as cost, time, transportation, and childcare. Opill is a progestin-only pill and should be taken at the same time every day to avoid pregnancy. The most common side effects include irregular bleeding, headaches, and dizziness. The decision has faced opposition from groups advocating for physician involvement in health decisions, especially for teenagers. The pill will be available in stores and online in the first quarter of next year.
