Narcan now available over-the-counter for opioid overdose treatment.

The US Food and Drug Administration has approved the sale of Narcan, a drug that reverses opioid overdoses, without a prescription. The nasal spray version of naloxone can now be sold as a single-dose in convenience and grocery stores. The move is aimed at tackling the alarmingly high drug fatality rate in the US, where more than 100,000 Americans died from drug overdoses last year. The drug has been available at pharmacies since 2015, but only with a prescription. The FDA and the pharmaceutical company behind Narcan, Emergent BioSolutions, said consumers will likely see the drug available over the counter in a few months.
