The parents of a college student with a heart condition who died after consuming Panera Bread's "Charged Lemonade" are suing the company, claiming that the beverage contained more caffeine than a can of Red Bull and a can of Monster energy drink combined. The lawsuit alleges that Panera failed to adequately warn consumers about the drink's ingredients. The student, who had a heart condition called Long QT Type 1 Syndrome, went into cardiac arrest hours after consuming the lemonade and later died. The lawsuit also highlights a viral TikTok video in which a user unknowingly consumed multiple cups of the beverage and experienced a surge of energy.
