Enhanced Military Connectivity with DoD Satellites in Low Earth Orbit

The U.S. Space Development Agency (SDA) is set to begin the demonstration phase of a data network in space to support military operations, with 19 communications satellites and four missile-tracking spacecraft already in orbit. The SDA aims to test the radio and optical communication payloads on the satellites, which will form the Transport Layer, providing tactical data links, beyond line of sight targeting, and missile warning/tracking capabilities. The satellites will serve as space nodes for the military's Link 16 network, extending its line-of-sight connectivity into space. The SDA plans to launch approximately 150 Transport and Tracking satellites in late 2024 and 2025 as part of the operational Tranche 1.
