EU Launches Investigation into X Over Illicit Content and Social Media Law Breaches

The European Union has opened a formal investigation into X (formerly Twitter) under the Digital Service Act (DSA) rules, citing concerns about the dissemination of illegal content during the Israel-Hamas war. The investigation will focus on X's efforts to counter the spread of illegal content, information manipulation, deceptive design, advertising transparency, and data access for researchers. This is the first time the EU has launched formal proceedings under the DSA. The announcement comes after initial concerns were raised by EU Commissioner Thierry Breton about the spread of illegal content and disinformation on X. The Commission will gather evidence and may take interim enforcement action against X.
