FERC gives AI data centers a fast track to hook into the grid

FERC ordered six major U.S. grid operators to fast-track interconnection requests from data centers and other large electricity users, requiring them to demonstrate timely access and that data centers will cover interconnection costs, while leaving room for new transmission tech (e.g., solid-state transformers or superconducting lines). Grid operators must report spare generating capacity within 30 days and defend or revise regional electricity rates within 60 days; the move also pushes for more accommodating behind-the-meter power. Despite the fast lane, the U.S. still faces generation capacity constraints as data-center demand is expected to nearly triple by 2035, and grid connectivity has lagged in many regions.
