NYC offers free Apple AirTags to combat car thefts.

New York City officials and NYPD officers will be distributing 500 AirTags to citizens to help deter and counteract car thefts in the city. The AirTags will be donated by the nonprofit organization Association for Better New York. Car thefts in New York City have increased 13% so far this year compared to the same time period in 2022. The officials hope that more citizens putting AirTags discreetly in their cars will help deter thieves, as an AirTag would make that car easily trackable by its owner. However, there are some flaws with the plan as the sound and iPhone notification will eventually make thieves aware they are being tracked.
