TL;DR

The /r/apple subreddit has gone private in protest of Reddit's upcoming API pricing changes that threaten to put some third-party Reddit apps out of business. The blackout is part of an organized effort that includes other subreddits like /r/videos and /r/DIY. Reddit's API provides apps with Reddit data and has been free until now, but the new pricing is prohibitively expensive, with some developers owing Reddit millions of dollars per year. Despite backlash, Reddit has yet to reverse course on its plans, and the API changes are set to go into effect on July 1.
