Robotaxi Delay Causes Ambulance Delay After Fatal Accident, Company Denies Responsibility

Firefighters in San Francisco have reported numerous incidents where autonomous vehicles (AVs) from Cruise and Waymo have obstructed emergency response efforts. In one case, firefighters claim that two Cruise AVs blocked an ambulance, delaying critical medical care for a severely injured person who later died. Cruise denies that their vehicles prevented the ambulance from leaving, providing video evidence to support their claim. However, records show at least 74 disruptive incidents between the San Francisco Fire Department and AVs over the past 16 months. Fire officials are calling for stricter regulation of AVs and better communication with the companies. Other cities like Phoenix and Austin have had fewer problematic encounters with AVs, partly due to lower population density and better responsiveness from the companies.
