Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon Web Services, along with TomTom, have formed the Overture Maps Foundation to create an alternative to Google and Apple's dominant online maps. The foundation has released data, collected and donated by Meta and Microsoft, that can be used as the base layer for a new map application. Overture aims to establish a baseline for maps data, allowing companies to build and operate their own maps without relying on Google or Apple. The data includes 59 million points of interest and can be customized by integrating proprietary information. Overture plans to keep the map data up to date using artificial intelligence and automated techniques.
