The Reality of AI: Threats to Jobs and Optimism Premature

Tech expert Pengcheng Shi warns that AI is already here and could replace around 300 million full-time jobs in the next five years. A recent report by Goldman Sachs economists estimates that 7% of the current US workforce could be replaced by AI. Industries that face the biggest risk of replacement include office and administrative support, legal, architecture and engineering, business and financial services, and sales. However, NYU data scientist Gary Marcus and 1,000 other experts and CEOs have called for regulation to address the short-term and long-term risks of AI, including misinformation, cybercrime, and unknown unknowns.
