Holiday Travel Chaos: Airports and Highways Overwhelmed as Vacation Season Begins

The holiday travel season is expected to be busy but relatively smooth if weather conditions cooperate. Airlines and federal officials are optimistic, although the Southwest Airlines debacle from last year serves as a reminder to guard against overconfidence. So far this year, flight cancellations have decreased compared to last year, and European travel has also been smoother. However, disruptions due to high winds and strikes have been reported in the Netherlands, Denmark, and the UK. Globally, air travel has not fully recovered from the pandemic, but the number of travelers is projected to reach 94% of pre-pandemic levels in 2023. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) expects the busiest days for air travel to be Thursday, Friday, and New Year's Day, while the busiest days on the road will be Saturday and December 28. Travelers are advised to monitor weather forecasts and be prepared for packed flights and potential gate-checking of bags.
